Interview date
7th July 2011
One of the UK's Leading Make Up Artists with over 20 years of experience in the industry and the man behind Daniel Sandler Cosmetics takes time out to share his tips and tricks with the Tantalist.
Do you use Self Tan?
Not on myself but I think self tanning is the way forward.
What Self Tanning brands do you swear by?
I don’t use them but I do use bronzing body prods that give the temporary look of a tan.
What make-up brands do you swear?
My own Daniel Sandler Cosmetics, Sisley, Bourjois, Shu Uemura, Estee Lauder, Clarins and Clinique.
Do you think Bronzers are a great to enhance your look? If so why?
Looking bronzed always make you look and feel fantastic. You can have more flesh on show and know that you can wear many more different coloured outfits.
What was the inspiration behind your brand?
Busy mums and working women have inspired me . I wanted to create an easy-to-use, long lasting, innovative and affordable cosmetics range that quickly makes a woman look her best.
Tell us about your make-up range?
Its based on 20 years experience of working in the beauty industry and what I carry in my kit, its everything I rely on when I go to shoots.
How long have you been in the world of make-up?
I have loved make-up since I was 13 years old. That’s 33 years ago now!
Do you think self-tanning has become more fashionable?
I do think that tans are more fashionable in the winter but I don’t think its necessarily the case all year round. However, its now more popular to fake tan because its easier to apply and you get better results than you did 5 years ago.
What make-up do you recommend using when using self-tan?
Depends on the occasion. For day time I would keep it fresh and summery by using soft golds and warm bronzes on eyes with a hint of pink or peach on lips and cheeks but at night I would go for smokey eyes, contoured cheeks and a nude or bright lip.
Which Celebrities get it right?
Rosie Huntington Whiteley, Emma Watson, Gwyneth Paltrow and of course Cheryl Cole.
Which Celebrities get it wrong?
What make-up look is hot right now?
Bright lips and loads of lashes.
Whats the new make-up trend this season?
Bold colours on lips is one look but theres also the “natural’ trend where shades of your skin tone enhance your natural beauty.
What differentiate tour make-up from others?
No one else makes a waterproof fluid blusher like my Watercolours. Most professional make-up brushes are long handled but mine are short handled so they fit in a girl’s bag. Am happy to say that both products have won awards. I was one of the first UK ranges to use Minerals.
Who is the most inspiration person you have worked with?
Many people have inspired me. Evelyn Lauder gave me a good few tips about make-up that I didn’t know about. Boy George helped me perfect the art of brows. Naomi Campbell showed me how a certain type of loose powder is perfect for all skin tones. Watching Lisa Eldridge’s make-up videos are inspring and looking at Pat McGrath’s work is mind blowing too.
If you had to pick one fashion accessory, what would it be?
Earrings. And diamond ones, at that.
Whats your top moisturisers?
I love Sisley All Day All Year and Collin Resultime Collagen gel.
What are you doing after this interview?
Probably make coffee from my Nespresso machine then crack on with an email to a supplier about an exciting new project.
Whats your favourite holiday destination?
Maldives or Seychelles. Haven’t been to either but its on my wish list plus I am dying to go on the Orient Express.
Cab or Tube?
Neither…helicopter, darling.
