Interview date
5th August 2010
Editor in Chief of Glamour Magazine reveals her beauty and fashion secrets.
What tanning brands do you swear by?
Well I’ve never met a fake tan I don’t like! But I love Xen Tan and St Tropez, but if it’s a DIY job at home, I love Lancome’s Flash Bronzer mousse.
What’s your favourite make up brand?
I genuinely have several favourites ranging from high to low budget – I can’t live without Mac eyeshadows, Philosophy’s Kiss Me lipgloss, Max Factor masterpiece mascara, and Nars The Multiple in St Bart’s. And that’s just for my ‘nipping out for a pint of milk’ look.
Do you have a Tanning Tip? I.e do you apply bronzers after a tan to enhance your glow?
I’m the palest person on the planet so exfoliation is absolutely crucial so that it wears and fades evenly. My other tip is to make sure you’re not slathered in body lotions before you go or the tan won’t take.
Have you seen a big rise in tanning with your readers?
Definitely, especially in such a sunless country as the UK! It seems to have become an established part of the beauty arsenal now, as routine as getting a haircut!
Do you think the days of the over dark tans are over?
Do you feel tanning has become more fashionable? Definitely. Although, perhaps more than ‘fashionable’, it’s such a natural part of any woman’s beauty routine/arsenal now. As normal as getting a manicure, so it’s made a lot of leaps in a short space of time.
Do you think the days of the over dark tans are over?
Ha! I know I’m supposed to say ‘yes’, but honestly I am SO pale, I still get a thrill to see a stark tan line after I’ve had a really dark spray. I literally never knew what it was to look tanned until fake tans became so advanced. I will never stop saying to poor James, ‘make me look ridiculous today so it will look really brown after I’ve had a shower tomorrow’.
What shows are you looking forward to at A/W Fashion week?
It’s so hard to choose there are many that excite me. I’m a huge fan of Erdem, so I can’t wait to see what he will come up with next. And in Milan – I think I’ve probably said this to you before sorry – Prada is always ‘a moment’, Miuccia Prada always does something that you could never guess at.
Who’s your favourite designer at the moment?
I Can’t possibly choose just one. I think Hannah McGibbon has really hit her stride at Chloe, that is looking fabulous. Equally, Phoebe Philo at Celine has made that show a must-see again in Paris. In terms of what I buy,it tends to be labels like 3.1 Philip Lim and Marni – I find they do clothes that are interesting, but at the same time don’t really date.
Are you please with the success of this years Glamour Awards?
We are thrilled with how the Glamour Women of the Year Awards went this year – it was our seventh, and definitely the biggest one yet. While I was dying with the awfulness of James Corden/Sir Patrick Stewart spat, it does tickle me that it’s become this ‘legendary’ awards show moment! It is an all-consuming monster to organise (between all of about six of us!) so we are immensely proud of what an important event it’s become.
Cab or Tube?
Oh darling, Cab every time, at least in my fantasy world. Sadly, when you live in Zone 4, the budget doesn’t stretch to that fantasy though!
Name one fashion item you can’t live without?
Just one????I’ll narrow it down as best I can – I love my jeans, my Prada platforms and absolutely anything metallic.
What are you doing after this interview?
Glamour’s October cover! It usually takes me a week to get it to a stage where it says the right things and looks the right way.
